Chiropractic Facts & Myths: Setting the Record Straight

Over the years, a number of myths about chiropractic have emerged. Many people who are unfamiliar with this holistic health service may have misconceptions about what it is that chiropractors do.

Myth: Spinal adjustments hurt

Fact: Quite the contrary! Many people feel relief immediately after their chiropractic treatments. In fact, most look forward to their chiropractic treatments. In people suffering from severe bouts of back pain or neck pain, some discomfort may be experienced. However, for most people this is not the case. Myth: Spinal adjustments are dangerous

Fact: Chiropractic spinal adjustments are extremely safe when performed by chiropractors. In fact, chiropractic adjustments are among the safest treatments for most back and neck problems.

Myth: Chiropractic doctors are not real doctors

Fact: Though they do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery, chiropractic doctors are specially qualified to treat patients using holistic health methods, such as spinal adjustments. Chiropractic doctors receive extremely thorough and demanding training and education, similar to that of medical doctors. Chiropractic students complete 4 to 5 years of academic study and over 100 clinical hours of patient management under professional supervision in order to become chiropractors. Chiropractic doctors must also complete rigorous National and State Board examinations in order to obtain a license to practice chiropractic.

Myth: Chiropractic is not scientific

Fact: Chiropractors have always sought to provide the safest and most effective healing methods for their patients. The chiropractic profession is dedicated to conducting scientific studies to improve their diagnostic methods and treatment techniques. In the last 20 years, chiropractic health care has established an impressive array of scientific research that demonstrates the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of chiropractic care. Myth: Chiropractic care is expensive

Fact: Research clearly disproves this myth. Chiropractic care consistently has been shown to be cost-effective in a number of government and workers’ compensation board studies.

Myth: You’ll have to continue chiropractic care for the rest of your life

Fact: Most doctors of chiropractic promote a preventive lifestyle. This has been misconstrued to mean that chiropractic care requires a lifetime of commitment. In truth, when a chiropractor recommends that a patient return for periodic spinal care, it is no different than a dentist who recommends check-ups every six months in order to prevent cavities and gum disease. It’s really that simple. Periodic care to prevent future problems safe, natural, convenient care now to avoid nasty, painful, complex problems later.

Myth: Chiropractors only treat back pain

Fact: Chiropractors provide effective treatment for all types of disorders, not just back pain and neck pain.
