The Importance of Choosing the Right Mattress.

As a chiropractor we hear it quite often from our patients; “My back hurts more in the morning.” The cause of back pain can be due to several factors: disc problems, alignment issues, arthritic degeneration and muscle pain. These conditions need to be evaluated by a professional such as a chiropractor.

Along with chiropractic care we often make recommendations regarding the proper sleeping position and the need for a good mattress. During sleep it is essential for your overall health that your body reach a state of deep sleep. This is when your rejuvenation is at its peak and you essentially “recharge your batteries.”

If you routinely do not achieve the rest your body needs you are more susceptible to a weaker immune system, illness, fatigue, lack of focus, stress, irritability and pain.

If you think your mattress may be causing you problems ask yourself these questions:

  1. Does your mattress sag in the middle?
  2. Do you wake up with pain in the lower back, mid back or neck?
  3. Is your mattress more than 15 yrs old?
  4. When you lay down do you “sink” into your bed?
  5. Is it a “honeymooners” bed? (you and your spouse roll to the middle when you lay down).

Ask the experts.

Visit your local chiropractor to rule out other issues that may contribute to your back pain that may be spine related and purchase a mattress from a reputable company that understands the importance of a proper mattress on your health and quality of life.

In the majority of cases the proper mattress will support what your chiropractor is recommending for you. It will be a firm mattress that supports the natural contours of your body, is comfortable not only initially when you lay down but in the morning when you wake up.
